NEGRONI / diary

ABOUT:

Here is the first recipe I used to make negroni’s. Below you’ll also find all of my variations, thoughts, and more.

SERVES 1

Ingredients

30g Campari

30g Gin

30g Sweet Vermouth

x1 Big ice cube

x1 Orange Peel

Method

1. Place ice cube into glass

2. Combine Campari, Gin and Sweet Vermouth into an ice-filled vessel and stir well to combine. Then strain into prepared glass.

3. Squeeze orange peel over your drink to release oils, then place peel into glass.

4. Enjoy

02 . AUGUST . 2023 - VERSION ONE

We made two, so I just doubled the recipe.

I just stirred the campari, gin and sweet vermouth in a measuring jug without ice and it was fine.

I used Campari, Tanqueray Dry London Gin and Cinzano Rosso Sweet Vermouth. I didn’t really do any reasearch into which Gin and Vermouth to use. Tanqueray is one of my faves which is why i chose that, and there weren’t many options for Sweet Vermouth, so I just picked this one.

It tasted great, just as good as the best negroni i’ve had at a bar.

Use the really big ice cubes if you can.

You can add a slice of orange instead of a peel if you like.

This is my favourite drink. Such a treat to be able to make them at home.

We added the orange into our Granola Yoghurt Bowl for breakfast the next morning.

10 . AUGUST . 2023 - THOUGHTS ON ICE AND A FRIEND SUGGESTION.

Since making negroni’s last week I’ve been thinking about why they suggest to stir it with ice. From my notes in Version One, you’ll see that I didn’t do that step. What I realised is that even though my negroni was ‘fine’, I shouldn’t have missed that step. Stirring with ice to combine, cools down the negroni and slightly dilutes it. So when you pour it into your glass with the giant ice cube, the ice cube won’t melt as fast and in turn won’t dilute your negroni as fast.

After reading my negroni post, my friend Nicole offered the following suggestions:
On negronis, I'm team orange wedge. Peel is too finicky for me and I don't like wasting the orange. I usually keep a jar of dried orange slices on the bar cart so I can have a negroni even when I don't have fresh orange. And you have to try a white negroni: equal parts gin, suze and lillet blanc. Delicious.’

Thanks Nicole, I’ll be trying all of these suggestions!
