MECCA 3000 | A New Chapter for Bourke Street
MECCA 3000 | A New Chapter for Bourke Street
When I first heard MECCA was moving into the old David Jones menswear building on Bourke Street, I was instantly curious. This building means a lot to me. It was the site of my first job in fashion, back when I was studying and still figuring things out. I worked in the international menswear department, surrounded by suits, foreign labels, and aspirations I hadn’t yet put into words.
When that store closed in 2020, it felt like the end of something. The building sat empty for years. And like much of Melbourne’s CBD, it became quiet, a little forgotten. It didn’t feel like a destination anymore.
That’s why MECCA moving in feels like a big deal. This isn’t just a store opening, it’s a cultural event. They’re calling it the biggest beauty store in the world, and it shows: 4,000 square metres, three levels, and an entire rethinking of what a flagship store can be.
But more than that, it’s a sign of energy returning to the city.
Set inside a restored 1930s heritage building, the new MECCA Bourke Street flagship opens on August 8 and brings together beauty, ritual, and experience. Think: seven Aesthetica skin treatment rooms offering meso-needling, microdermabrasion and laser; a wellness apothecary; a MECCA Café; a fragrance scentsorium; and services from Flowers Vasette, Trophy Wife, and more.
Seeing names like Trophy Wife and Flowers Vasette in the mix makes it feel especially Melbourne. I used to make special trips to Vasette just to walk through their Fitzroy store. Knowing they’ll now have a presence here makes the space feel even more magnetic.
I’ve followed MECCA for years and always loved their George Street flagship in Sydney. This one is set to outshine it, and I can already imagine weaving through each level, chasing that feeling of discovery I’ve missed in the city.
The only thing missing? Maybe a bar. But a beauty café, flowers, facials, fragrance, that’s still a very good day.
I’ll be sharing more once I visit. For now, this is me marking the occasion.
A new chapter for Bourke Street. This is a big deal for MECCA. But also, something that feels good for Melbourne.
