JULIET WAS HERE
GANNI, Melbourne
(A STYLING EVENT, observed)
Sally from Styled by Sally hosted an intimate gathering to celebrate GANNI’s PF25 collection.
Sally and I have been working on a project together. I was going to say it was nice seeing her in her element, but honestly, Sally is always in her element. I love everything about her. She’s clever, decisive, has a great eye for what looks good, and she’s just so bloody nice.
She brought in what she calls her GANNI ‘vintage tee’, the first GANNI graphic tee she ever bought. She joked you could tell how old it was by how small and fitted it was. These days, everything’s oversized. Everyone knows Sally is a fan of the graphic tee (we actually made one together), so it’s no surprise she’s a GANNI girl.
GANNI girl, the brand’s own term for someone cool, spontaneous, and slightly irreverent. It’s less about trends, more about personality. Mixing high with low, polished with playful.
At one point in the night, Sally asked the room who owned anything from GANNI. Half the guests put their hands up. Some were so obviously and chicly wearing it.
I love seeing that. Never hesitate to wear a brand to an event connected to it, it’s the best place to wear it. It shows you’re part of the club. Customers often feel weird wearing ALPHA60 when they walk into our store, but I love it. It tells me what they’ve chosen, how long they’ve been a customer, and how they style it into their own wardrobe.
Sally spoke about that too, about how you can be a full GANNI girl, or just use their pieces as playful additions to your own look.
“No matter what I say or decide, people are going to tell me what they think,” Sally said, after someone asked whether to cut off the little fabric labels sewn onto some of GANNI’s pieces. A funny moment that hinted at the light chaos of personal style, and how some people will always have thoughts about yours.
I really appreciated being part of this styling event. It made me realise just how many beautiful pieces GANNI has. Relaxed fits, nothing too tight, and nothing ordinary. Pieces designed for fun people to have fun in.
The last time I was at this store was when it opened, the party on 10.10.24. This time felt different. More intimate. More reflective.
Over the past year, I’ve illustrated a few iconic GANNI pieces, the buckle ballerinas, the leopard print pants. I saw so many chic women in Paris wearing similar leopard looks. There are certain GANNI elements you can always spot: the graphic tees, the butterfly logo, oversized collars, those blouses with the half-open self-ties down the front.
By the end of the night, I could finally put my hand up too, I bought myself a special piece, which I’ll share in my next post. They wrapped it beautifully and tucked in a little leopard print scrunchie, GANNI’s version of a party favour. Want to guess what I bought?
When I got home and started telling Sam about the event, the first thing he asked was, “Wait, they don’t do mens though?”
Sorry bou-bou… non.
